General Discussion / Re: sounds grand piano
« on: January 23, 2011, 07:21:20 PM »
Hi Leon,

once more congratulations to your recent purchase ;D. New version of SMFW30 I am preparing now will be compatible with Windows 7, but with floppies trick lies more in the hardware as software as you have found out yourself. I am always formatting floppy on my W30 first and then using SMFW30 to write on it. There is very few good piano disks for W30 and it is mainly due 30kHz sampling limit and small memory which is causing higher piano tones to sound cheesy  :-X. I had my take on quality piano for W30 several times but results were never pleasing. It is much easier to create nice analog synths or even Hammond B3 or Fender Rhodes are possible. Eventually I can try to make something useful by downsampling from some nice softsynth ala: http://www.pianoteq.com.

Anyway to stop my rumbling, I will present some links  ::).

Well to note my progress on this, unit is working fine with W30 but booting is of course not possible.
I have tried all possible jumpering to no success.

I will still try different firmware's to but I dont really feel to reverse engineer that one  :P.
For the rest I've got some nice funny photos of W30 :D :D :D. After some 'jumpering' poor
thing thought that there is 7 - 80GB harddisks connected on every SCSI Id  :o oh well there was just one :D

Hi guys,

all the best in New Year 2011 to everybody! I am back from vacation (it was great by the way) and I would like to show off some progress :). Patch editor is shaping nicely, displaying and saving of basic patches is already working. Some small issues in Tone Editor has been fixed as well. Here is the screenshot of my current build.

best regards

Hi,

if the google translate works well then your question was:

Necesito hacer una consulta en español.
tengo discos de 3 1/2 con canciones y quiero pasarlos a midi con mi pc. Tengo sistema operativo xp. ¿se puede hacer con el smfw30? ¿Cómo se hace?

Google Translate:
I have questions in Spanish.
I have disks 3 1 / 2 songs and I pass it to midi with my pc. I have XP operating system. Can you do with the smfw30? How do you do?

well SMFW30 can export and import MIDI files. Please follow my small how-to in new http://smfw30.svetlik.be/forum/index.php/topic,153.0.html section of this forum.

How To / Import/Export Roland Song to MIDI
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:13:16 PM »

Hi everybody,

because of numerous requests I will walk you through import and export procedure for MIDI files.
Prerequisites are installed and working latest version of SMFW30 v2.0.

MIDI Export

  • Click on MIDI Editor button
  • Open Diskimage with your songs. (In example I am using official Roland Disk #3 delivered with W30)
  • Right click on the song 'SWING CAFE'.
  • From the context menu select "Save MIDI".
  • Press Save button

Now should appear converted MIDI 'SWING CAFE.mid' file in My Roland\MIDI directory.

MIDI Import

  • Click on MIDI Editor button
  • Open empty Diskimage where you want import MIDI file.
  • Right click on the contents of disk.
  • From the context menu select "Load MIDI".
  • Select MIDI file to import.
  • Press Open button in the file requester.
  • Press button 'Save' on toolbar or in menu File > Save.

Now should in diskimage appear newly imported Roland Song. You can transfer diskimage to floppy and load it in Roland.

Thats all for now.

News / Patch Editor
« on: October 17, 2010, 10:15:50 PM »
Hi guys,

you are probably wondering what happened to me to be posting so much :) But the answer is very simple, I've got sick (again  :-[) and been nailed to bed for half of a weekend. So tonight I got few hours just to lazy lay on the sofa and tend to all my hobbies :) (did some guitar playing first) and then made a draft for Patch Editor. So void my previous statement 'Patch Editor will be not available' and have a look on the basic display I have coded tonight ;)

If everything goes fine I shall have new release of SMFW30 with the patch editor really working by this Christmas.

cheers

News / SCSI Madness
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:38:38 PM »
Well,

this is maybe not directly related to SMFW30 but maybe it would be interesting to you. I have purchased SCSI CF Card Reader/Writer from Microtech (PCD-47B). I can't wait until it arrives from States. Objective is to test if W30 can boot from it. Nevertheless even if it can't I am gonna use it as a replacement for my HDDs. It can take up to 3 cards (CF/SM/PCMCIA) on different SCSI id's. As I said I cannot wait to test it finally ;)

News / New SMFW30 Release coming ;-)
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:32:49 PM »
Hi guys,

just to let you know that I am not really so lazy as you've must been thinking ::). I want to state that new release of SMFW30 is coming! Things that will get fixed are:

Tone Editor
  • Import of waves with odd length
  • Editing of tone/subtone title
  • Editing of all tone/subtone parameters with waveform preview

MIDI Editor
  • Correction of SYSEX troubles

Patch Editor
  • Basic implementation - Load / Save / Rename and Delete patch

the exact release date I do not know yet. I would like to perform some deeper testing. So if there are any willing beta-testers just pm me or send an e-mail.

cheers

Hi Jim,

this should be actually working correct in SMFW30 v1.0 for Windows and it is definitely NOT a limitation of Roland W30 :). Give it a try.

nice weekend (or a beginning of a week to you too)

Hi Jim,

nice found :). It's a bug  ::). When you import wave in the B bank it will exceed the disk image size of 720kb. I will have a look on this asap.

General Discussion / Re: New features
« on: September 05, 2010, 03:56:03 PM »
Hi Jim,

if you can send me an example of wav files causing the corruption I would be glad to check whats going on ;). On the topic of direct sampling: You need very good input source (basically quality preamp should do), second problem can be the impedance of source. Impendance is much more difficult to solve. Also I found that sensitivity trimmer of back of W30 is quite dodgy. Try to mess with it for best result, full on doesnt always mean the best signal.

As for the features, I have originally implemented full blown tone editor in past but when I have added unlimited undo capability it went unstable so I have removed it. However now I am in process of fixing it and adding it in update which I hope to release before the Christmas. Here is a small teaser  ;D ;D ;D

About the patch editor I would like to implement it on the simple level but I dont give any guarantee it will make it in the upcoming update.

I see that SCSI device support have already two interested users  ::) Time to start coding  ;D

Thank you Jim for your enthusiasm.

best regards

General Discussion / Re: SMFW30 Version History
« on: September 05, 2010, 03:35:04 PM »
Hi Ricoche,

well you are right that SMFW30 has already a long history by first starting as a MS-DOS program, then initial Windows version and at last completely reworked final Windows version. In the span of years I have been adding features as I have needed or another users requested. There was no initial 'Grand design'  ;D. Can you please point me which features from previous versions are you missing in SMFW30 v2.0?

I am also planning to release update to ToneEd (extended Tone editing) and MIDIEd (Sysex problems). In connection to this I will update the website as well which is now to say the least very minimalistic  :-[. So I can place full changelog on all versions there.

General Discussion / New features
« on: August 30, 2010, 02:02:28 PM »
Hi guys,

recently I've been talking with one of registered users about new features. Specifically about SCSI devices support (ZIP drive, HDD). Is anybody else interested in such a functionality?. I am curious about your suggestions  ;).

In any case feel free to post here what you most miss in SMFW30.

cheers
